Plantain Chips

Nobody loves plantain chips like I do, Yes I know that face you have on now. That’s the face most of my folks would wear when I make that statement. let me show you evidence, cause I No fit dey explain.

Plantain chips are a crunchy snack popular in Nigeria that can be made using ripe or unripe plantains. Make sure the plantains are still hard and just starting to ripen if you’re using ripe ones. So that they will be crunchy when finished, this is done.

Unripe plantains are used to make plantain chips, which are brilliant yellow, as opposed to ripe plantains, which are deep yellow.

Even though many people avoid frying food, you can cook healthy plantain chips with the oil of your choosing to reduce your cholesterol intake. You don’t eat it as a snack every day either. Your kids need it even if you don’t want it since they’re still developing. Unripe plantains are my favorite.

Ingredients

Green plantains

sufficient amounts of vegetable oil for deep frying

Salt as desired
Make sure the plantains are just starting to ripen and are still quite hard before using them to make plantain chips. The use of soft plantains ensures that the snack never becomes crispy.

RECIPE

Peel and wash the plantains in step 1.

Thinly slice the plantains into a bowl of water. It is advisable to use a vegetable slicer to slice the plantains to avoid knife cuts. The water helps prevent the plantain slices from changing colour.

When done, add salt to taste and stir.

Transfer the plantain slices to a sieve to drain the water.

Step 2: Heat some vegetable oil till hot.

Put the slices of plantain into the oil in such a way that they are not stuck together.

Stir till the plantains are bright yellow and crunchy. If using ripe plantains, they will be deep yellow.

Transfer the plantain slices to a sieve lined with paper towels.

To maintain a crunchy plantain chip, store it in an air-tight container but not until it has cooled down completely.

Plantain chips made with unripe plantains hardly absorb any oil while those made with ripe plantains absorb some of the vegetable oil during the frying process.

Next time you’d be the one explaining to your love for plantain chips. Thanks for reading.
